What You Can Do

Small actions add up. We’ve already made a difference – help us see this through to the end!

Danielle Zuckerman, 212-839-6210

Tell the Commissioner that you live in Washington Heights and are demanding action on the abandoned Riverside Viaduct. Please note that Commissioner Zuckerman is not responsible for how we got here with the Viaduct (she began her position in 2025). She has inherited the problem and we hope to work with her to resolve it. You’ll find a suggested script here.

Take photos (if you feel safe doing so) and use the 311 app, website, or phone number to report unsafe conditions, abandoned construction vehicles, construction debris (which can shelter rat colonies), illegally parked cars blocking emergency access, and other unsafe and unacceptable conditions related to the Viaduct construction. Calling 311 usually doesn’t get the issue resolved, but it does create a record of the issues that DOT can’t erase. And a record like that is a powerful tool for us and the elected leaders who are working with us. And sometimes calling 311 has resolved a specific problem, so you never know. (Please note that we’ve had better results if we provide our name and phone number when filing a report, but you don’t have to.)

This Project began with just six people from one building who were tired of feeling hopeless and angry, and decided to do something about the Viaduct. The most important thing we’ve learned is that we are not alone. We’ve connected with THOUSANDS of people from buildings all over Washington Heights who all feel the same. Help us grow stronger by connecting us with more people!

There is a lot misinformation about the Viaduct situation. People mean well, but when DOT and the contractor hide behind silence, rumors take hold. Point people towards this website where they can learn the facts – and how they can help!

We need YOU! We’re volunteers and there’s only so much we can do on our own. Contact us to find out how you can help. It’ll feel good – and sometimes we have cookies. Examples of what we need: Spanish translation; flyer distribution; outreach to local businesses, co-op boards and rental buildings; social media promotion; and more!
